Making Data Science Education Accessible

DataCamp is making data science education accessible to individuals and companies all over the world, through courses taught by leading experts and educators in the field of data science combined with its modern online learning experience and self-paced lessons. Ranked as the 54th fastest-growing company and the second-fastest growing education company on the Financial Times (FT) ranking of the Americas’ Fastest Growing Companies 2021, DataCamp is the trusted platform for learners at companies like Uber, Google, Intel, PayPal, Deloitte, and about 80% of the world's Fortune 1000 companies. In October 2020, they rebranded and the new brand ushered in the need to execute consistency across all touchpoints, an important one being their cheat sheets—because of the importance of the information they offer to learners, they are the perfect marketing material.

Molding The Building Blocks

The redesigning of DataCamp's Cheat Sheets started with a thorough audit of the existing cheat sheets—the content structure was great but the brand had a new look so the sheets needed visual baptism. Auditing informed the project's goal—to apply the new visual language system to the existing content while keeping it readable, simple, consistent, and maintaining the brand's aura.

Then came the first challenge—picking an appropriate paper size, the old cheat sheets were designed on A4 paper as they were intended to be shared at events but this meant sacrificing readability. Virtual events were fast replacing physical events so it was expected that people would use the cheat sheets digitally, we had to choose a size that was a perfect balance between digital legibility and marketing flexibility. We needed something that would work on screens and print so we settled for the A3 size—it was the one option that made the content easy to read and could also be printed without losing readability.

I set the sheets on a 3 column grid, making it easier to organize content on the page while maintaining the same structure across all cheat sheets.

The building blocks of the cheat sheets are a 3-column grid, modular systems of typography and frames, assembled together as needed in each subsection to adapt to the contents and establish a hierarchy to make it easy for learners to find information.
